Amazing! April 2019
My first 3 course meal in a long time, I have many diatry requirements with no dairy, no wheat, no meat and very allergic to banana but this was not a problem, I never expect a dessert but was very impressed when they suggested the vegan ice cream, we stayed for 2 nights and the service was excellent on both night, would definitely recommend

Delicious Sunday Lunch March 2019

Having family over from Doncaster we decided to take them for Sunday Lunch at The Downe Arms. What can I say, it was absolutely delicious!!! We had the full 3 courses and were amazed. The quality was outstanding, from our Delicious Soup starter, Roast Carvery with huge selection of tasty vegetables and The Best Apple Crumble ever!!! We won’t need to eat for the rest of the day!!!
The staff were really attentive and friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. We shall certainly be returning very soon! I would highly recommend anyone to try The Downe Arms if you are looking for a lovely relaxed atmosphere and delicious food!!!
Well done to all the team!!

New Years stay & party December 2018

We stayed at the hotel for the night before and the night of New Year. The night before we eat in the bar where the food was excellent. The following night we joined the very good value for money New Year party – about 250 attendees on an all-inclusive deal. The room was comfortable and clean with an excellent shower and good access and facilities. It is very conveniently located for Pickering and Scarborough and all the staff were very friendly and could not do enough to help us out. Breakfast was also very good value. Overall the hotel is excellent value for money and a real find. We will definitely visit again and have already booked for the next New Year.

Absolutely Perfect! December 2018

We came across this hotel by accident as our first criteria was a dog-friendly hotel for a Christmas break. We were so lucky to find the Downe Arms. Four of us stayed for 3 nights, from Christmas Eve to the day after Boxing Day., every night perfect. As soon as we walked through the front door we were presented with a glass of sherry and mini decorated mince pie. After taking our bags up we went to sit by the log fire in the restaurant, where more mince pies and mulled wine were available, together with a variety of other drinks and snacks (all complimentary).

The next event was the Christmas Eve candlelit dinner. The food was excellent – our party had either steak or sea bass, both beautifully cooked with piles of vegetables. We then retired to the bar so that our dog could join us, in what is obviously a popular place with local villagers.

Breakfast at the Downe Arms honestly beats any 5-star hotel I have stayed in. There was a cold buffet but also a huge choice of hot food, all cooked to order – in particular the poached eggs were perfectly cooked.

We chose a traditional Christmas lunch, again beautifully cooked, but with portions so huge that they were impossible to finish – traditional for Yorkshire! In the evening there was a cold buffet supper with a large variety of very tasty snacks – exactly what was needed at that time, after our huge lunch.

A few practical points: the bedroom was a little on the small side but had all we needed and was attractively decorated with some orginal old beams. There was plenty of wardrobe and other storage space, and a modern en-suite bathroom. As we had a dog, we were given a room just above a side outer door, making it easy to get out without going through the rest of the building.

The location is excellent, with plenty to do in the local area. On Boxing Day we drove for about 20 minutes to North Bay beach, which is dog friendly, and had a large plate of very good fish and chips for lunch. Back to the hotel for rest, then an evening bar snack. When we checked out the next morning we were pleasantly surprised to find that even this was included in our package. The whole 3-day break was superb value for money.

I cannot close this review without mentioning the hotel’s greatest strength: its wonderful staff. Without exception they were efficient, professional and, above all, friendly and continually helpful. I am disabled and, throughout our stay, they could not have been more considerate of my needs. For example, one morning I did not feel well enough to come down for breakfast and my husband asked if he could take something up for me. A few minutes later the hotel owner was at my door with a breakfast tray.

All that remains to say is “Thank You” to Phil, the owner, Dave the manager and all the other staff for a most enjoyable stay. We have already been recommending the Downe Arms to many people we know and will be continuing to do so.

Great carvery October 2018

We attended as a large family of 10 plus people per booked for a family members birthday. The carvery was very good. Meat was juicy and tender not dried out like some places. Nice large Yorkshire pudding. Fresh veg and trimmings were continually filled along with sauces on request. Comfortable relaxing atmosphere. Kids very welcome. Staff very friendly. Reasonable price.

Relaxing Break October 2018

Had a fabulous 2 night stay here. Staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. Food was excellent and loved the Friday night fish special which was a free bottle of wine with two fish main courses. Live music was great on Friday night too. Beautiful walks all around the area. We travelled by train and the Scarborough bus stops outside.

Great Hotel September 2018

We had a good two days stay at the Downe Arms, the only down side is it is on a busy main road.
But saying that the room was nice the food was good and the staff were really lovely. It is central for the coast Whitby, Scarborough and the glorious North Yorkshire Moors.
We visited Goathland village which was the setting for the TV series Heartbeat, it was like going back to the TV setting, it is also where the steam train used in the series and Harry Potter arrives on route for Whitby.

Perfect Choice July 2018

Decided to go with this hotel rather than stay in Scarborough itself. The hotel was actually cheaper than staying in the Travlelodge or Premier Inn. Situated only about a 10 minute drive from the town and easy to find. Nice looking hotel with gardens and plenty of free parking Were greeted well on arrival and allocated a lovely superior room which was nicely decorated and spotless. The food in the hotel was reasonably priced, well presented and couldn’t really be faulted. Considering the hotel is situated on a main road the traffic noise in the rooms was also minimal. All the staff encountered were friendly and approachable. Would definitely stay here again.

Spotlessly clean, excellent staff July 2018

We stayed here for 2 nights last week to attend a wedding. The hotel was first class, all the staff and managers were efficient, friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Our large family group dined at the restaurant on the Thursday night after arrival, the food was amazing with large portions. My husband and I had booked a Superior Room (No.206) which was a large comfortable room with plenty of storage, en suite bathroom was huge with a walk in shower as well as a separate bath and fluffy white towels. Bed was very comfortable. The wedding was held at the hotel where all the rooms for the ceremony and reception had been beautifully decorated. The 3 course meal for 60 guests was faultless and the waiters/waitresses delivered a brilliant service. Lovely gardens and seating areas outside and plenty of parking spaces on site. The only negative comment I had was that the rooms were very warm but I would certainly stay here again.

Excellent value great place July 2018

Really good olde world bedroom with four poster bed and en suite with lots of drawer and wardrobe space.
Only stayed one night fantastic evening meal and really good breakfast with food for all tastes.
Lovely setting and idyllic for weddings which seems to be a very popular place for them.
Right next to a lovely old church and bell tower with a very different stroll along part of an old railway with an Ice house and ancient carved stone along the way.
Will visit there again definitely.

Lovely Hotel and Staff June 2018

We stayed here in May on a 2 night voucher deal. From the minute we walked through the door we were made to feel welcome and nothing was too much trouble. No complaints with the room. assume it was a family room as there was an extra bed. Room was bright, large and more than comfortable. Room had everything needed for a comfortable stay. We had breakfast both mornings and cannot understand some of the negative comments. Freshly cooked, well presented and very tasty and filling. We ate here both nights and the meals were excellent. The first night we ate in the restaurant area which was quiet and the 2nd night in the bar which was a little more lively. Had no issues here whatsoever and without a doubt would look to stay here in the future. Thanks Downe Arms Hotel staff
